Hello my name is Braeden Duhart i am senior here at San Diego State studying sports journalism. I am currently taking JMS 430 and have created a solo account to express my interests and show the work I have been doing. This semester I will be expanding on this website and will have a full site around the time of December.I am looking forward to working on this site and am excited to see how it will end up. I want this site to be a great representation of the work that i am producing and to show others who i really am through my work. I also would want this site to be helpful and entertaining for the average reader. This is my first time using solo in a journalism class so I am intrigued to see how it will go.<h3>BLOG 2</h3>I have recently added my personal contact information under the contact page on my website. I provided my email and my phone number for other to people able to get ahold of me. I am going to start adding details around my website instead of the default images and color-ways. This website i am happy to see the future progression of this and to see how it will turn out once December rolls around. I expect this website to be very useful and am excited to look back and see how my work has translated over the semester. Across this website you will find blog posts, contact information as well as projects over this entire semester for JMS 430. The progression for the website over this semester was very exciting and very cool to see now looking at it. From being all stock photos and stock writing to a full page of my work. I had a very fun time in JMS 430 expanding on concepts and developing websites that can help in the future outside of class. This class has helped me develop a strong skill for digital content creation. and a way for me to express myself online. The JMS 430 story as well as the final essay are two pieces of work that I am excited to have on the website. These projects have shown my development as a journalist and the ability to interview and accquire news from the field.

<h3>Dedication to Local on Campus Stories</h3>Braeden Duhart&nbsp;Jms 430&nbsp;Professor Roman11/21/25&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Safety concerns rise at SDSU amid weekend party surge Topic Choice: Overall safety of San Diego State's campus, specifically with greek life and nightly events on weekends.&nbsp;San Diego State University’s weekend nightlife has been deemed a cornerstone for the student body, yet with all that excitement comes a sense of unease. Fraternity Row draws the attention of others with parties, loud music and plenty of students roaming the streets looking for the next best party. This has allowed for many non-San Diego State individuals to try to get in on the nightlife on campus. However, this mix of random strangers and students has led to reports of shootings and suspicious activity by unknown individuals, and it&nbsp; has left the student body wondering if it is even worth the risk.​​Sorority members concerned about attending late-night fraternity events​ Ariana Luman, a senior at San Diego State and a member of the sorority Kappa Delta, expressed her discomfort on campus at night during the weekends. Luman is accustomed to being out late at night on weekends on campus. However, she has had to second-guess her decisions at times due to the uncertainty of stepping out late on campus.​“There is always someone who may not be here for the right reasons.” Luman said. “I don’t feel safe walking around by myself.”​​When asked about what her sorority has done to address these incidents, Luman said, “Kappa Delta has reminded us that our house is open to all members to ensure that they feel safe and comfortable.”​Students in Greek life are fully aware of the constant police activity and are reminded continuously by the school to take extra safety precautions when out. Yet students seem to be finding themselves in the same predicament every weekend.&nbsp;&nbsp;​Fraternity Row between Thursday and Saturday, past the time of 9 p.m., can be very chaotic to many. Crowds of people roam the streets looking for some night fun on the weekends, yet many might not even realize the danger that is right around them.​Greek leaders feel the pressureGreek life leaders have been put in a tough situation, as it’s important for them to acknowledge the risk that comes with hosting late-night events and serving alcohol to underage students. The party atmosphere is something college kids thrive on, yet making sure everyone is safe is the No. 1&nbsp; priority.​James Bird, a senior president of Delta Upsilon, gave his insight on the perks of being a president for a student body organization and how he handles the pressure that comes along with it.​”It’s a huge responsibility. I'm always making sure everyone who attends has a great time and makes it home safely.” Bird said, “For the position I’'m in, safety is my top priority whenever we host an event, and I, as president, need to be held accountable to that.”​When asked about safety concerns and communicating with the school about hosting events, this is what Bird had to say: “Being in touch with the IFC president helps me plan events smoothly and more responsibly. If an issue occurs or a safety concern is at hand, the Greek life presidents will schedule a meeting or text in our chat to determine the next steps moving forward.”​According to SDSU, the university’s<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://urgent.sdsu.edu/sdsu-alert-platform"> safe-app</a> will allow the school to communicate with the students about emergencies on or near the campus.​The school’s police mission statement reads, “The San Diego State University<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://police.sdsu.edu/about"> Police</a> Department is committed to promoting a safe environment for all who come to the San Diego State University campuses, properties, and events in a manner that is fair, transparent, and respectful.​”​Ryan Llewellyn, a former member who was the head of loss prevention for the chapter of Delta Upsilon, gave his insight and thoughts on the overall campus safety here at San Diego State.​“I’d say campus is not the safest place to be at night, but there’s no question most people are just trying to have a good time," Llewellyn said, "The mix of drunk students and police roaming at night can create situations that escalate quickly.”​Being in a leadership role on the fraternity's board affected him in any way and how he handled the issues regarding campus safety, Llewellyn said, “When you’re in a leadership role for over a hundred college students, you realize how quickly a small issue can turn into something serious.”​Llewellyn emphasized that, “Being the head of loss prevention, it was my duty to coordinate with those who worked the party and to make sure that everyone who walks through that door is accountable, whether they’re members or guests.”​When hosting parties, there is always a chance of a severe incident to occur and the possibility of leaving a lasting impact on the chapter as well. That became clear when he described an event he personally witnessed on campus.​“I’ve seen situations where I have had to assign members to walk students home who were way too intoxicated to be walking alone late at night, “Llewellyn said. “I’ve witnessed fights break out on campus during my walk back home; it makes you think about how vulnerable people can be when alcohol is involved.”&nbsp;&nbsp;​Non-Greek life members have similar worries after dark​Irwin Avendano, a junior at SDSU who is not involved in Greek life, gave his perspective&nbsp; on the overall safety of campus: “I wouldn't consider campus to be the safest place, especially with all the recent police activity going on.”​Avendano had this to say about whether he receives a text from the school about potential safety concerns before a night out: “It has made me more cautious for sure. I wouldn’t say I have avoided going out completely, but I do keep that in the back of my mind.”​Avendano gave his insight on not being a part of Greek life and how the safety concerns are still present. He had thoughts of potentially rushing a fraternity to find new people, yet due to past research on fraternities at SDSU decided to stay away.​“I still am out at night on the weekends looking for parties or going to friends' houses, so I see all the chaos when I'm out on campus, "Avendano said. “I have seen fights break out, drunk people lying on curbs, I basically feel like I have seen it all.”​Concerns grow as nightlife culture collides with security risks​San Diego State’s weekend culture may be defined as a cornerstone of campus life, but the voices of students across Greek life continue to mention campus safety. Whether it’s sorority members second-guessing late-night events, Greek members worrying about how to keep everyone safe, or non-Greek students navigating crowded streets and police activity, the concern is always present. As the university encourages students to continue looking out for one another, many hope the campus can find a way to still be open for others but safe for everyone.

The Power of Local Journalism: Braeden Duhart's Commitment to San Diego

<h4>Synopsis:</h4>In JMS 430, I learned how to implement AI as a tool for research, as well as gaining hands-on experience with building a website from scratch.&nbsp; Throughout the semester, we brainstormed ideas for website content and developed infographics to visually show the work we had been working on. Engagement and providing meaningful content for individuals, is one of the most important factors in authentic journalism. JMS has allowed me to strengthen my digital media skills as well as add to my creative background.<h4>Developing the Story Project:</h4>Journalistic and Ethical GuidelinesWhile working on this story, I made sure to follow the core journalistic principles of being accurate and transparent with whoever sees my content. I made sure that whatever information I provided was credible and could be brought back to the source. Without that initial trust, a reader may never be able to truly take in your material. I pride myself on my material not being biased or having a direct tone towards a side. Ethically, I focused on making sure that anyone who I brought into my work as a source was cited correctly and their statements were displayed respectfully.ChallengesI would say one of my main challenges with te news story was with finding the right sources for the story. Using AI tools were helpful yet when needing expert sources on the matter, finding individuals willing to sit down and interview may be difficult. Luckily, I was able to have a solid amount of connections to good sources, so my job was a bit easier. Coordinating schedules, however, was a bit tough; everyone is running on their own personal clock, and finding a day and time may take a while. Verifying quotes and making sure that when transcribing from an audio recording that the words correctly correspond with the source. Digital Media Experience:Working on my website and story project this semester helped me develop a much clearer understanding about digital media and to the levels it can exceed. Labs taught me skills on how to make sure everything I'm providing is accurate and ethical while also being engaging. Without those three principles, the product would not be to level in which I prdie my self on. The addition of numerical data was a very cool tool while working on other styles of media to go along with our written stories. Adding numerical data for stats, or to be a visual component on a infographic are just one of many ways digital media could be used. It has been another component from JMS 430 that has allowed me to keep expanding on my work and bettering my overall craft.The use of AI in this class was something that I had never seen before while attending state. The rapid development of AI has allowed it to help with infographics, formatting, and even brainstorming ideas for a new story. Google maps lab, in particular, was one that really allowed for creativity and a freedom aspect. I learned a lot from that and ended up using that for one of my digital media pieces for my final.JMS 430 has honestly been one of the better journalism classes I have taken while attending San Diego State. I felt that this class really allowed you to understand the skills and put them into practice. Whereas other classes just felt like learning the material was only good for a week. The website was a very helpful site that allowed us students to keep expanding on even after JMS 430. This assignment has allowed us to share our work with others, and possibly internships in the near future.
